Today I spoke to one of you. Not my parents, but another father of an Asian American kid growing up. I understand that as a parent, you are concerned for your child’s education and future. I also understand that the American system is faulty at points and does not provide a clear path to success.
Even so, the path that you have placed your daughters in – one of endless rote memorization and asceticism is not the right one. I guess in the end, I really have no right to tell you how to parent your child, but if we are to take this as an objective evaluation of what works, I say you are wrong.
Last time we left off with more of the same. Well, the other half of spring break has been … more of the same with spurts of genius. Tobias and I just played some house tag this week, basically. He came over after I went to his house and we played some massive basketball. We played with some old folk who had apparently only shot threes their entire lives and two young’uns who just set picks for each other and shot. Honestly, not so fun when a team sport becomes a tandem dance.
When it was only our group, the competition was fierce as hell. People got cut, punched and pushed. Jaeman managed to rip my thumb all the way back to the back of my hand after he reached in during a crossover. Wonderful. In addition, I suffered a twisted ankle (remedied immediately by an ankle brace) and some random cuts.
Pain and all, that’s the best kind of basketball if you ask me – competitive and beautiful.
Drive left, cross, stop-step, take the jump – shot!

In light of so much interest on the post How we got [kinda] screwed by a garage door repairman, I decided to make an introductory post for Castro Valley. Commentors have said that my posts are not substantial and backed up by good sources. I agree. Therefore, let me give you my impression of the town with substantial backup sources. You may not agree with what I have to say and I would be happy to listen to your retorts – as long is they don’t have the obviously racist tones some of the comments have carried. Shall we?
Full article after the jump.
This weekend was not hectic at all, for once. It really only entailed one thing – installing a garage door opener. This is the same garage door opener that was “fixed” for 70 dollars by some shady Castro Valley “mom and pop” place last weekend. Now, Castro Valley is a terrible town. Don’t even second guess that fact. It’s a small, crappy town trying to retain it’s “upper-middle class morally-upright neighborhood” image in the face of encroachment from ghetto-ass Hayward and political sabotage by the “No Child Left Behind” act, otherwise known as mix the fake ghetto white kids with black kids from the real ghetto.
To a certain extent, it brings me great joy to see Joe Smith – the kid living with two Protestant parents in a loving, $100,000 income home get completely out-hip-hoped by the transfer kid with the grill. Oh yes, a grill. I fear the backlash though – white supremacy has some roots in our little town.
More about the swindlin’ after the jump.
