Invisible Inc: A jazzy, hip-hop romp through the city.

Invisible Inc.

[Click link to CD Baby product page]

Music can be boring these days. Kanye dropped his album and it was exciting for a good couple of days or so. Okay, I still have I Wonder in my playlist. Even so, other than some notable work from Talib and Common, the hip-hop scene has faded back to the club music, boring, hook-filled BS of old. I can only listen to lyrical suicide for so long.

Enter Invisible Inc. They’re young. They’re relatively inexperienced, having just released their first album. But oh, are they fearless. If you’re looking for something new, something fresh – here it is. Jazz mixed with the strong hip-hop beat. Lyrics delivered with a strong spoken-word flow. It sure catches you off-guard.

They come from a strong artistic foundation. They are Berklee students, National Spoken Word Champions, Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble members and openers for names like Talib Kewli, Matisyahu, and Lyfe Jennings. Quite the resume for such a young group.

Their music is catchy and a bit humorous. Lyricist George Watsky has a unique flow and that may take some time to settle in. The beats are strong, as producers Max Miller-Loran and Daniel Riera, both being jazz musicians, have melded hip-hop and jazz wonderfully. It reminds me a bit of Shibuya-kei from the likes of Paris Match, though the rap obviously sets it apart. Most importantly, it is so damn refreshing. I especially like Where the Sidewalk Ends feat. Passion, Calling All Cars and In the Pocket.

I actually know Max from elementary school and he’s has obviously nurtured his talents into something great. I wish them the best of luck and hope you guys check out their stuff if you’re looking for something that is above the masses.

‘Tis all.

Zero hour is upon us. Well, after a few more days and a six hour drive.

So this will be a discombobulated post. Yes, discombobulated. I could have used messy, or gasp, disorderly, but no, discombobulated. Syntax is such a fickle thing.

First of all, a little cool internet how-to to share. This one is for anyone who enjoys some damn good writing. Not typing, but writing. Those who take notice of how the pen flows and curves on the page. I’m one of those people. I’ve always been fascinated by the written word, venturing into the artistic realm of graffiti and a religious adherence to cursive as my weapon of choice for quick midterm writing.

I used to use a lot of architect specific technical pens (stolen from my dad’s desk) from Pilot called the “Razor Point” series. They are great for their precision. However, they don’t really glide across the page like a good ballpoint pen would. They feel more make writing with a scalpel – not the best feeling.

I actually had this pen I borrowed from my friend Jordan years and years ago, but I always loved that pen. Apparently, this was the holy grail of modern cheapish pens called the Pilot G2. This pen rocks. It just feels so fluid, my lord, it practically writes for you. However, my cousin in Japan told me he could top it. He whips out a 20,000 yen ($200) Mont Blanc pen and lets it loose. HOLY HELL, it blew my mind. Needless to say, when I read about this instructables on how to create a Mont Blanc pen using the shell from a G2, I nearly died out of writing glee. Yes, I’m insane like that. It’s the most simple concept ever – $15 dollars and 3 minutes to create the equivalent (writing-wise) of a $200 pen-masterpiece. FUCK YES.

Anyhow, back to more worldly matters. The new Common album has given way to old school Queen (in godly FLAC quality) and rocking the ears at the moment. I will finish my internship on Tuesday (5) days from now. It went by as slowly and as quickly as I thought it would. Today, I found a place that would make one thousand stickers to put on our display hooks. Then I pulled around 400 shoes for an athletic show convention. Those kind of dull jobs makes TOMS seem as exciting as white bread (which in it’s defense, is exciting enough).

However, TOMS is quite the fireworks of a company when I really look at it. Blake, our founder, was personally invited by former President Clinton to attend his annual Clinton Global Initiatives – a networking, seminar thing that has the power to really throw around some big bucks in the name of philanthropy. Bono will be on the guest list so you know it’s for the rich do-gooders. We are also being noticed by the other firms and being praised as “revolutionary” and “the only one of it’s kind.” Damn, maybe we are like white bread during its conception. YEAST (+) FLOUR (-) WHEAT, HOLY SHIT!

Upon coming home, I know this was quite a great experience, but I’ve posted about that nonsense already so I’ll save you the pain. Also upon coming home, I think I’m going to really turn a corner in my life. I hope everything starts out well next semester. I have two great clubs to help build up, and other personal matters to attend to. I’m going to declare and get my major(s) in order. This is the precursor to either an awesome, life-affirming time, or an absolutely disastrous hell of a time. Either way, it’ll be interesting to say the least.

Like I said before, I am planning a bonfire @ Ocean beach in San Francisco. I have it marked on my calendar as the 24th of August, Friday. Ocean beach has this first-come-first-serve policy on its fire pits which you have to use if you want fire. I think it would be great if we could get there in the afternoon prior to sunset as the bridge and the ocean serve as a backdrop for possibly the coolest sunset ever. Well, if the fog is merciful.

Smorey goodness will occur if Tobias the firemaster can tend to a nice one. Bring something to toss around and that’s all I would want before school starts. Just one good night with some friends. Inform me if you’re down – before Saturday please.

‘Tis all folks.

The Legend of Suraj Sen: Episode One – “Fierce hard diag.”

So I was bored out of my freakin’ mind tonight and decided to pursue this idea of mine. Suraj always comes up with these ridiculous slogans for random things and his latest one was incredibly awesome.

Suraj: So I went to the Mystery Spot the other day, you know, the place on Jaeman’s bumper sticker?

Jaeman: Huk huk, Kimchi.

Me: Nice, how did you like it?

Suraj: You know what?

It’s just a fierce, hard diag. That’s all it is.

Me (in my head): Mystery solved.

So here I was tonight with Photoshop CS2 buzzing in the background. I head on over to Google and find a better alternative to cafepress.comzazzle.com. An hour later and I have this abomination of an inside joke shirt:

[Click for the backside, but don't mess with the options!]

I’m sure only the most intimate friend of Suraj and our fellow JOUF members will get what the hell is so funny about this shirt. Well, tell me what you guys think – changes can be made!

Fanime 2007: No holds-barred anime fanatacism … in San Jose.

This past weekend I had my foray into the world of anime fandom. The stage? Fanime 2007 @ the San Jose Convention Center. I went due to “losing” a bet to Tobias as can be read about in the first ever post on inkless. Well, he ended up not picking any costumes for me after realizing the bet benefited his health. I have to say I didn’t really lose that much since it was a very, interesting experience to say the least.

Notice my awesome 55 dollar entrance pass and the photoshopped out name. “Hosmotch” was supposed to be my fanime name, but Tobias just put that there. It’s a curse word Tobias and I made up when we were young – long story short, it is quite insulting in that inside joke kinda way.

Reader beware – this is going to be a ginormous post. Take the jump, if you dare.

End of the semester: with finals tormenting our souls, we celebrate.

Today our apartment had our end of the year party that had been postponed way too many times. It was both a final get together and a way of sending Chris off (he’s graduating) and for me, Carlos as well, (he’s going to Argentina and I’m not going to be here for the spring).

I always complain about the shabby quality of Berkeley folk and how so many of the kids here I just cannot stand. However, today was one of those “glass-half-full” kinda days. Thought this school does have its share of idiots and greedy bastards, the good people I have met are absolutely astounding – not in number, but just in quality.

More of the same after the jump.

I need HOUSING in L.A.!

I have an internship down in L.A. for 2 months in the summer with TOMS shoes (end of May to mid June and August, full month). At first, the company offered a nice two-story condo out near Santa Monica for us interns but little did I know, all the other interns are girls. Due to liablity, (as if I’m going to pull anything they’ll be liable for) I have to find my own abode. Jaeman is flaky as usual and so I was wondering…

DO ANY OF YOU KNOW OF ANY HOUSING IN L.A. THIS SUMMER?*

*that is cheaper than the ridiculous 1000 dollars for a single room I’ve been seeing. I’m going to be around the Playa Vista area near Loyola Marymount. Please, please, please leave a comment if you have anything. Thanks!

A healthy breakfast includes a skyline of SF and a hearty helping of horsepower. Yummm.

One day in high school, Nate said: “we need to start a street racing group.” At that time, we all drove 90 horsepower beaters – not that there’s anything wrong with them. Thus, JOUF was born in Ahmed’s pre-calculus class one day. Jaeman was designated wheel supplier, as we all dreamed of the day when we would own worthy vehicles. JOUF actually stands for “Jammin’ On yoUr Face.” (JOYF is definitely a sub-par acronym.) Why did we name ourself something so insane with no relation to any kind of car lingo? Well, ’cause Nate said it with vigor and we all laughed our asses off. Simple as that.

Now, we don’t really street race and I think we’re more of a parody of any kind of illegal street gang. However, we do love our cars. We don’t segregate the American and the Japanese models either! Today was a nice day to head to Treasure Island off the Bay Bridge and snap some shots. Without further ado, drink em up! [Mine's the shiny black Evo =)]

The World of Warcraft: all the benefits without the high Columbian prices!

In the college world, the World of Warcraft, (WoW) is a commonly known lifestyle game. It carries both a stigma of digital addiction as well as an entrance to a reserved group of people. In a blog partially about college, it has to be mentioned. You would really be blown away by how many people and the variety of people who play this game. Blizzard entertainment has cleverly found the goldmine of online gaming and it will milk this thing to the very end.

We’ve all heard the stories about insanity surrounding this game in Asia. For instance take this and this article about deaths directly related to prolonged time spent playing this game. Here’s a story about a suicide related to the game.

However, what about the home front?

I used to be a WoW player, so here’s my take for both the addicts and the uninformed.

“Bleed[ing] Blue and Gold” sounds like a colorful massacre.

I’ve had recent high school seniors ask me about Cal and my experience. Why they ask me, I have no idea – its probably more productive to ask the Campanile itself what it thinks of the school.

It did get me thinking about the whole college experience so far though. First of all, it has been an awesome transition from that terrible high school. It’s a reaffirmation of the human race as a species that has any potential for intelligence. Therefore, it is really unfair to compare it to any kind of CV high school experience. Really, this requires an objective article but alas, objectivity is impossible!

So, here’s my subjective two years of college after the jump!
