The Office Support The Rabid T-Shirt

Thursday night was the preview of The Office. After this hell-week of work, this had been a great wind-down, break kinda thing. This weekend is PS120 mid-term weekend and I’m ready! Tomorrow, I’m going to run over an outline with my GSI and see if everything checks out.

It’s going to be about the nature of order in an anarchic state as seen by the neorealist versus the neoliberal – it’s exciting stuff, really!

Anyhow, The Office premiere was awesome. It was just pure awesome. It’s just one of those shows that doesn’t seem to miss. I was almost motivated enough to buy that shirt, it’s 24 bucks. But eh, I’m too frugal and it isn’t that clever. For those of you that follow the show, this episode was a bit weird. They treated the cameraman as a more active character in the show, which felt a bit awkward for me.

However, all that awkwardness was easily worth the great moments during that marathon. Oh yes, the PB&J thing was brilliant considering fans have been using the name “Jam” since the show first started. I like the parallelism (or perpendicular-ism) with the relationships. It is hard not to root for the prettier, nicer people though.

It is a great start to what is probably going to be an awesome season. Let the hilarity ensue!

Also of note, How I Met Your Mother has aired already and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is 6 episodes in already. Scrubs is going to start its seventh (and final) season next month. Hurray for the time-waster that is television (and the various online sources of it!)

‘Tis all.

One for the night.

First of all, WordPress added some tag feature. It’s gonna let me add random tags to my posts instead of just putting them under boring categories, like self, everyday and economics. I still plan to use em though, it’s a quick way to organize things. But I plan to tag like a madman as well. We’ll see how it goes.

Tomorrow is going to be one of the most tiring days yet. 5 hours of sleep – then class from 8am to 12:30pm. Then I have to read a piece by Orwell in order to comment about it on our online class posts by 5. For me though, the deadline is more like 3:30 because I have a consulting club meeting at 4. Which, by the way, is bound to run into turbulence from the varied “visions” the founders seem to have. Oh, joy.

Thank God for good music and the Daily Show. Otherwise, I might have just slit every artery I can reach by now. I spent a horrendous amount of time on my economics work. Somewhere in the range of 8 hours – for 3 exercises. Who knew elasticity could affect a subsidy so much? Am I just inadequate, or do I try too hard? Probably a nice mix of both.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. You know, while biking to class and such. While it’s true that I am not as happy as I probably could be, it does feel like I’m accomplishing a might lot these days. It feels in order, my professional and academic life. That’s nice.

I think I would trade this order I feel for some chaos in the other parts of my life though. I find myself talking to strangers much more. It is insane. For instance, I had a pretty long and convoluted conversation with this one employee of glasses store about college and the admissions process. It then lead to talk about music, basketball and San Fran. I was just browsing the damn store and BAM! – conversation.

That same day, I talked to an entire group at an auto tune-up shop. I was helping my dad get his car’s maintenance done. Five Indian girls – talking about relationships, children, school and robbing banks. Strange indeed.

Then buying shoes, I learned that the lady who helped me out was Persian and she thought Iran was going in the wrong direction. At least Pumas are popular in Iran too, she told me, as if that would console the social instability.

Am I that desperate for social contact?!

I guess so. Maybe it’s time for crappy beer and mixed drinks that taste only like the alcohol?

Nah. Time for more Nujabes, and sleep. Oh, and tagging like a madman.

‘Tis all.

Brain Dead: Dimensions one through ten explained.

My brain just imploded into the first dimension. I like how he explains that what we are able to see like how a two dimensional object would be restricted from the third. It really makes you think, what do we really know?

Invisible Inc: A jazzy, hip-hop romp through the city.

Invisible Inc.

[Click link to CD Baby product page]

Music can be boring these days. Kanye dropped his album and it was exciting for a good couple of days or so. Okay, I still have I Wonder in my playlist. Even so, other than some notable work from Talib and Common, the hip-hop scene has faded back to the club music, boring, hook-filled BS of old. I can only listen to lyrical suicide for so long.

Enter Invisible Inc. They’re young. They’re relatively inexperienced, having just released their first album. But oh, are they fearless. If you’re looking for something new, something fresh – here it is. Jazz mixed with the strong hip-hop beat. Lyrics delivered with a strong spoken-word flow. It sure catches you off-guard.

They come from a strong artistic foundation. They are Berklee students, National Spoken Word Champions, Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble members and openers for names like Talib Kewli, Matisyahu, and Lyfe Jennings. Quite the resume for such a young group.

Their music is catchy and a bit humorous. Lyricist George Watsky has a unique flow and that may take some time to settle in. The beats are strong, as producers Max Miller-Loran and Daniel Riera, both being jazz musicians, have melded hip-hop and jazz wonderfully. It reminds me a bit of Shibuya-kei from the likes of Paris Match, though the rap obviously sets it apart. Most importantly, it is so damn refreshing. I especially like Where the Sidewalk Ends feat. Passion, Calling All Cars and In the Pocket.

I actually know Max from elementary school and he’s has obviously nurtured his talents into something great. I wish them the best of luck and hope you guys check out their stuff if you’re looking for something that is above the masses.

‘Tis all.

Not a Monday person: Bicycle danger, fried rice and Keynes.

So i’m taking a break from reading this:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0393001903.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Today was a relatively awesome day. I had almost forgotten that I had switched my morning section so I rushed to find 20 Wheeler, which turns out, is in the catacomb-like belly of the building. After that section, I realize now the GSI team and Prof. Delong really mean it when they say we are “guinea pigs” for this class.

After a harrowing Chinese oral presentation and surprisingly understandable Econ discussion, I went to the dreaded money hoarding bookstore. At this monetary hell-hole, I sacrificed 247 bucks for two measly books, a study guide (because my French economics professor does not explain slides) and a really crappy stapler. From the business standpoint, I can see why they include no staples, but from a good-will to the customer standpoint, WHY!?!?!

I then jumped on my bike and raced towards home. Two seconds into my daily downhill extravaganza near VLSB, the bottom of my jeans catches the chain-guard. My leg is then trapped with the whirling motion of the pedals and I wildly swerve to gain balance again. The result is a nice sized whole in my jeans (repairable!) and a really scared me. I’m going to have to go invest in one of those pant-leg-velcro-reflective-bands so I don’t die.

Oh, and tonight, I made some fried rice with egg and minced pork. To my surprise, it was absolutely delicious. I coupled it with some Miso soup with tofu and I had a fine meal. I’m proud of my housewife abilities (as Chris would call them).

Before I get back to Keynes, here’s a interesting snippet from my reading so far:

Praise, therefore, the beauty of the flame he wishes to touch, the music of the breaking toy; even urge him forward; yet waiting with vigilant care, the wise and kindly savior of Society, for the right moment to snatch him back, just singed and now attentive.

Amen, Keynes, amen.

‘Tis all.

The Aston Martin DBS: So cool, she grants her owner absolute immortality.

[from thetorquereport.com, now my wallpaper]

Ok, so in this world, you have your burnt-out, overly tanned Ferrari owners. Then you have your “I own an island and I can buy your freedom” or I am an Arabic prince Bugatti and Zonda owners. The Lambo folk are just trying to one-up their Ferrari driving friends and look stupid doing it.

Then you have your Aston drivers. In the world of cool things, the Aston is the epitome – the peak. If anything were to be cooler than an Aston, it would have to be immediately destroyed as we would all have to yield to its power. So when I say the new Aston Martin DBS is the coolest Aston ever, you’ll know I mean coolness on the scale of the coming of God. Enough cool to create universes – or destroy them.

Here, here and here are some links to automotive heaven. Look at those amazing curves, those aggressive headlights and that sleek, powerful back. The interior is purposeful, filled with stitched leather and aluminum accents – delicious.

Not only is the Aston a looker, she performs greedily well, thanks to the DB9’s V12 heritage and 510 horses. As always, Aston Martins sound like a raw power expressed as the most beautiful roar in the world. Don’t believe me? Watch (rather, listen to) this vid. AM_DBS_40_watch.jpg

Now, as an Aston owner, you want to look awesome before even entering the car right? Of course. Enter the DBS remote watch (click pic for higher res). It can unlock the car and remotely start it. Wow, just wow. How am I supposed to live my life now, knowing something this awesome exists in the world?

Well, the price tag of oh, $332,000 for the ride and $35,000 additional for the watch helps a bit.

But if I am going to shell out half a house in California for a car, you damn well be sure that I am going to buy the watch that boosts my coolness factor even more so. After all, if you drive 007’s car, you might as well tell time/start your car, Bond style.

Motor Authority has some high-res images for those who want to flatter their desktops. And a gallery. Aston’s official site has a whole DBS page.

——————-

If you’re still unsated, here’s a youtube vid about the car with commentary from its designers: (The car sounds so mean!)

So guys, if you ever hear that I sold my soul, you know what I sold it for. Materialistic I know, but really in the face of an Aston with a remote start, who isn’t?

‘Tis all.

This shirt will get you killed, once the translation comes through.

From post-jdm.com. These are the people that made the “白人看不懂” (literally: white people can’t read this) shirt as seen on “Yellow Fever” by WongFu Productions. It has been a rallying point for Chinese kids in high school, yes – the phrase.

Apparently, they have … expanded their line-up of catchy Chinese phrase related merchandise. For $14.99 you can one this shirt which says “那个” (literally: that one), with a plz (please) at the end. Honestly, I’d have to say it is in bad taste, but I’m sure high schoolers are going to go ape-shit over this one too.

“That one” in mandarin is pronounced like “nay-guh.” Say that four times fast and you’ll get it. This is their “disclaimer” on their website:

Haha ha, yeah… Post-JDM does not condone racism. For those who don’t get it, this shirt is meant to be a play off words. Please excuse any hilarious offensiveness.

Play on words or not, people will get offended. Chinese is a popular language these days. Careful what you print before you start some unneeded tension beyond what you can control.

‘Tis all.

I always loved that threadless shirt. Too bad they were sold out before I got one. But it does represent some brewing rage I had today.
